2. Hermitage Museum

St. Petersburg, Russia

One of the largest museums in the world, the Hermitage boasts a permanent collection of over three million items. Displayed in six palatial buildings, this historic museum is also one of the continent’s oldest, founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and first opened to the public in 1852. Its collection of paintings might be even larger if not for the sale of several masterpieces by the Soviets in the 1930s. Financier and politician Andrew Mellon purchased 21 of those works and donated them to the American government, and they became the cornerstone of the Smithsonian’s National Gallery of Art.
